This was an excellent book! As I began reading this book, it pulled me in right away with an interesting plot and vivid characters. The characters were easy to like and I was certainly was pulling for the main character Liam Rider a former basketball star at Brick Memorial High School. Unfortunately Liam let his temper get the best of him near the end of an important game and he brutally beat up a competitor. After the opponent's parents decided they want to press charges against Liam for assault and battery, Liam was sentenced to Admiral Farragut Academy instead of going to prison since he was generally a good kid who just snapped as he had never gotten into trouble before.Once at Farragut, Liam discovers a school of boundaries, limits and rules which he didn't appreciate since he previously didn't have to deal with these things as the star of the basketball team. Could he make it here being part of a team? Could he follow all the rules, stay out of trouble and excel academically like the alumni and get into college after graduation? Would he make any friends or would he rebel and end up in prison after all? Would his parents talk to him again since they cast him aside after the fight? What about his girlfriend Ashleigh, would they continue to be a couple?
Shortly after his arrival, Liam started having vivid dreams or where they hallucinations? Could he find out what happened to the three boys who kept appearing in his dreams? Would he be able to find out the source of their pain in time to save his own life which was now being threatened? Could he save his new best friend Lisabeth? Towering Pines Volume One Room 509 Bruce A Sarte 9780615384863 Books Reviews
I picked this book based on a small excerpt where Liam is literally shoved out of bed by no-one. I haven't read many ghost stories and figured I was over due.
The book starts with Liam being hurt by 2 members of the opposing basketball team, one of which then foul him just as he is about to take the winning shot at the end of the match, Liam loses his mind in the heat of the moment and takes his revenge by beating him with a folding chair, leaving him in a coma. Liam then finds himself facing aggravated assault charges, and being sent to Military school to serve out his sentence.
Once there he tries to settle into the routine of the Academy. But he keeps having strange dreams, dreams in which his life is in danger.. and time is running out.
I actually felt sorry for Liam at the start of the book, injured deliberately by the opposition and then fouled near the end of the match its no wonder he lost his temper (yes he took it too far), and then shunned by his family who wouldn't even arrange legal advice for him... Not once did he try to deflect the blame away from himself.
The story developed at just the right pace to keep you reading. Not giving away too much early in. However, the final showdown seemed rushed and left me feeling a little cheated. Now im looking forward to reading the second book in the series.
Towering Pines is the story of Liam Rider. Hotshot basketball star. After commiting an assualt he finds himself enrolled in Military school. It's here that he meets Lisbeth Harrington and a friendship is formed. But it's also the beginning of Liam's mysterious dreams and his encounters with the ghosts from romm 509's past.
I have to say that when I first started reading this book, I didn't like the characters. None of them!! I thought they were quite the group of angry young men. I felt no Sympathy or compassion for Liam after the attack on his rival team member that lands him in Jail. Yes it was retaliation, but in my eyes that just doesn't make it right!! He is quite conceited and full of himself. And then we have the way that Liam treats his girlfriend Ashleigh. He is just downright rude and nasty to her!!
But as the story goes on we get glimpses into why Liam is the way that he is and slowly we begin to see little changes in him and by the end of the book he was a character that I could say that I liked!! Lisbeth was also a character that had to grow on me. She was fairly brash and cold but then I suppose she is one of the few females in a male dominated military environment. But throughout the book she comes out of her shell and we learn some things about her that I wasn't expecting.
I was completely shocked by some of the things revealed near the end of the book. I hadn't picked that as being the way that things would go!!
I'm really not one for mentioning errors in books and for the most part I can overlook some grammatical errors, but there were some incidents in this book, which had me going back and rereading previous pages to see if I had possibly read something wrong. One thing that comes to mind, is that Liam smashes his mobile phone against a wall, but then a few pages later he is using that phone to call someone. Something like that should really have been picked up in the editing process before the books release.
All in all, I really enjoyed the concept of this story. The author's writing style was really easy to read and the story moved along at a pace that kept me interested in the story. The growth of the main charcters throughout the book was good. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a read that contains paranormal aspects without a lot of romance.
3.75 Stars
This book was given to me as a gift from the author for my honest opinion.
As other reviewers have note Towering Pines defies being pigeon-holed into one category. The intriquing story of Liam, a young transfer student at a millitary academy, is so "real" you can smell the salt air of the Admiral Farragut Academy. What happen next .. well that's the story. Suffice it to say it's not dull. Elements of mystery, horror, paranormal goings on come flying on keeping the reader guessing to the last minute
I was captivated from the opening page. I can't wait for volume 2. Having been a resident of Pine Beach I know the old campus quite well. Bruce's descriptions brought AFA back to life. Great, Fun Read
